Saudi aid center, Yemen rights ministry plan more joint programs

Author:

JEDDAH: Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah, general supervisor of the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSRelief), held talks with Yemen’s Minister of Human Rights, Mohammed Askar, on Thursday on relief and humanitarian work provided by KSRelief in Yemen, with 274 projects now in place across the country.

During the meeting In Riyadh, the humanitarian and human rights situation in Yemen were also discussed, including violations committed by the Houthi militias against civilians, such as the bombing of water wells and residential neighborhoods, killing and injuring hundreds of civilians.

The recruitment of children for use as human shields was also condemned.

Al-Rabeeah said KSRelief is keen to cooperate with Yemen’s Ministry of Human Rights to ease the suffering of the Yemeni people and implement programs to support the most affected groups in the country.

“Our work is focused on programs to protect women and children, and rehabilitate children recruited by the Houthi militias.”

Al-Rabeeah said the humanitarian role of KSRelief proves that the Arab coalition is not only a military but also a humanitarian partnership that has been providing food, medicine and clothing to all Yemeni regions for more than three years.

Askar praised the relationship between KSRelief and the ministry, and said their joint programs will have a positive impact on the lives of Yemeni people.

In an earlier interview with Arab News, Askar said: “Iran has succeeded in turning the Houthis into a military tool that threatens international peace and security, especially in the navigational corridors of Yemen such as Bab Al-Mandab and adjoining waters.

“Iran has poured funds and arms in a fervent bid to expand their hegemony in the region. The Iranian intransigence has kept the war raging, which has shattered the lives of Yemenis,” he said.

Since its establishment, KSRelief has launched projects worth $70 million in Yemen. The projects aim to help the country amid devastation caused by the Houthi militia.

Earlier, Mohammed Al-Jabir, Saudi ambassador to Yemen, said that the Kingdom’s assistance to Yemen totaled about $10.96 billion.

JEDDAH: Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture has announced that the Camel and Pasture Research Center in Al-Jouf, represented by the Olive Research Unit, has successfully produced more than 30 varieties of olives trees from different countries.
The Ministry pointed out that “this success was achieved due to the suitability of the Kingdom’s environmental conditions, where some of the varieties gave high productivity indicators.
It said intensive agricultural techniques were introduced in 2006, which proved successful and has been expanded for large enterprises and companies, adding the most modern methods of harvesting were also introduced.
The center’s Olive Research Unit was launched in 2002, with the establishment of a hereditary complex containing more than 30 varieties from the most famous olive producing countries, including Spain, Italy, Greece, Syria, Jordan, Tunisia, Turkey, and Morocco).
The top nine categories were then selected due to their high productivity and quality.
The center produces high quality seedlings of different olive varieties, which it distributes to olive-producing farmers at nominal prices in an effort to strategically support the industry, as olives are a widespread food security crop and an important source of healthy fats in nutrition.
Olives are grown in confined areas between latitudes of 30-45 degrees and Saudi Arabia is one of the countries that benefits from the the climate of the Mediterranean basin, particularly the northern regions of Al-Jouf, Tabuk and Hail and the southern regions of Al-Baha and Asir, where olive trees have been regarded as a blessing since ancient times.
Olive growth is suitable for mild temperates in the winter and hot temperatures in the summer.
The center pointed out that four research fields have been established for olives in Tabuk, Hail, Tabargal, and Al-Qurayyat in Al-Jouf area.

New courses in Jeddah aim to counter extremism

Thu, 2018-08-30 22:02

JEDDAH: Hundreds of journalists, educationalists, bankers, entrepreneurs and other professionals from 57 Islamic countries are expected to benefit from new training courses on intellectual security that aim to prevent the spread of extremist ideology.

The two-week courses, to begin on Sunday, will focus mainly on ways to improve intellectual security, promote moderation and fight the money laundering that helps to finance the spread of extremism.

They will be held throughout the year at the Jeddah headquarters of the Union of News Agencies (UNA) of the member States of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, in partnership with Distance Learning and Training Company Group (DLT), a specialist international training company. It is the first project of its kind between UNA and a private company.

DLT CEO Zuhair Azhar said intellectual security is an important issue that is key to quality of life and stability. His company, he added, has developed training courses in which experts from inside and outside the Kingdom will educate people on the issue, along with related concepts such as moderation and money-laundering crimes.

“We have set up a work plan for the UNA training center, taking into consideration its role in fighting intellectual terrorism and its financing sources, as well as its supporters,” Azhar said, adding that Muslim nations in particular need to protect their culture and identity against cultural invasions.

“Thus, we have worked on preparing courses to protect our identity,” he said. “We have also selected our audience on the basis of their effectiveness to help us spread moderate, peaceful ideologies.”

Azhar said the courses would focus on practical ways to help protect individuals and families from intellectual deviation.

“This course will also shed light on the role of families, schools, and media to keep Muslim societies safe from aberrant thoughts,” he added. “The courses will also provide practical measures that can be taken to achieve such a goal.”

The Kingdom has, he said, been successful in promoting moderation, fighting extremism and battling against money laundering. “Saudi Arabia has become a global model to follow in combating deviant ideologies and preventing all sorts of illegal money activities,” he added.

All aboard: The bus project that transformed Hajj transport in Makkah

Thu, 2018-08-30 21:34

MAKKAH: Shuttle buses to the holy sites in Makkah were introduced 23 years ago to help Hajj pilgrims get around, increase capacity and reduce traffic.

The project is one of the pioneering ideas developed and launched by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Institute of Hajj and Umrah Research over the years.

Dr. Othman bin Bakr Qazzaz, head of the Research and Studies Department at the institute, said King Salman’s government makes every effort to help pilgrims perform Hajj with ease, peace, safety and security. The institute was established to assist with this, and has carried out many studies and research projects, the most important of which resulted in the shuttle buses being introduced in Makkah.

The bus project

The initial bus project took place in 1995, he added, involving the National Tawafa Establishment for Pilgrims of Turkey and Muslims of Europe, Americas and Australia. It was designed to find a way to reduce traffic on the roads used by pilgrims to travel from Arafat to Mina, and protect pedestrians from the risks posed by vehicles.

Special bus routes were set up to help pilgrims quickly move from their camps to Muzdalifah, Mina and Arafat. The project was a great success, Qazzaz said, in helping pilgrims travel safely and quickly from Arafat to Mina.

It was subsequently expanded to the National Tawafa Establishment for Pilgrims of Non-Arab African Countries, the National Tawafa Establishment for South Asian Pilgrims and the National Tawafa Establishment for South East Asian Pilgrims.

He said the service not only connects pilgrims’ camps with the holy sites but other parts of the city as well, and operates during Hajj and Umrah seasons.

This year, the buses began transporting pilgrims from Arafat to Muzdalifah on Aug. 20.

The shuttle bus center has space for 2,000 buses, while the roads are closed to other traffic and no vehicle can enter without authorization.

Pilgrims are transported from Arafat to Muzdalifah in less than 20 minutes and the total trip, including loading and unloading, takes less than 50 minutes.

Previously, the journey could take between four and five hours, given the millions of people traveling at peak times. The buses also help the environment, reducing air pollution by restricting the number of vehicles on the roads.

Thu, 2018-08-30 20:50

JEDDAH: The Saudi Border Guards’ efforts to protect the Kingdom, eradicate illegal drug imports and arrest smugglers have been highlighted in a permanent exhibition at the National Committee for Narcotics Control headquarters.

Awwad Eid Al-Balawi, director-general of the Saudi Border Guards and a member of the national committee, opened the exhibition on Thursday.

Committee spokesman Bandar bin Abdullah Al-Rumaihi praised the Border Guards’ work and said visitors to the exhibition, including university and school students, will gain an insight into the formidable tasks facing the organization.

Security organizations have a major part to play in the renaissance and development of the Kingdom in different fields, he said.

The exhibition offers a guide to the Border Guards’ hi-tech equipment, including armored vehicles and thermal cameras used to trap smugglers, as well as information sections on drugs and future projects.

Photographs of Border Guards officers who lost their lives protecting the country are also displayed.

The exhibition also focuses on the organization’s sea search and rescue operations, and programs the directorate is working on to achieve future goals.

After opening the exhibition, Al-Balawi and his delegation visited the National Center of Drug Addiction Consultations and the electronic surveillance radar Manar.

Al-Balawi also met with the secretary-general and leaders of the two organizations to discuss joint cooperation to eradicate illegal drugs.

Thu, 2018-08-30 04:35

JEDDAH: Aradhana Khowala has been appointed as NEOM’s managing director of tourism, the  project announced on Wednesday.
NEOM, a $500 billion megacity, is a key part of the Kingdom’s strategic vision to diversify the economy.
“We will be working alongside Aradhana to make NEOM an exceptional global tourism destination looking ahead to the future,” said CEO Nadhmi Al-Nasr in a tweet on NEOM's official account.
Khowala, who was CEO & founder of Aptamind, is considered a world expert in the tourism and hospitality industry, and was awarded the 21st Century Icon Awards in association with CNBC and London School of Economics as an inspirational game changer and tourism leader.
The Red Sea project and NEOM are set to enhance Saudi Arabia's position on the touristic map of the world.
At the end of July, Saudi Arabia's King Salman holidayed at NEOM to enjoy some rest and recreation, according to state media.
In October 2017, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman unveiled the 26,500-square kilometer megacity and economic hub the likes of which the world has never seen.
Backed by the Kingdom’s vast Public Investment Fund, NEOM will operate as an independent economic zone powered solely by regenerative energy, spanning three countries, complete with its own self-governing laws and regulations and all strategically designed for economic stimulation.
The project’s vision is to make it the best place in the world for living and working.

‘Be Helpful’ initiative: A beneficial learning experience for young Saudi volunteers

Author:
Thu, 2018-08-30 00:12

The “Be Helpful” initiative, which is run under the Hajj Ministry, has helped young people serve pilgrims in this year’s Hajj.

The program has assigned volunteers of both genders to different locations based on their skills and experience, and is part of the Vision 2030 plan to encourage young people to join voluntary programs.

Roya Redah Tambosi has set a good example for volunteers. The 30-year-old mother-of-four left her children behind to work voluntarily for pilgrims in the holy sites. Her husband was also stationed at Muzdalifah as a security man, so the couple relied on their 12-year-old daughter, Hoor, to look after the children.

It is the first time Tambosi has been able to get away from her youngsters for a noble duty. However, she is determined to do it again for the next year’s Hajj, and burden Hoor once more. The latter will surely become a good caring mother.

When she was young, Tambosi told Arab News, her family used to take her to the mosque to help them distribute food and water to pilgrims during Hajj.

This might have been the seed of humanity Tambosi’s family had planted in her heart.

Tambosi is now a leader at Be Helpful,  one of the many initiatives the Hajj Ministry has supported and adopted. She is a new media supervisor overseeing team field tasks.

Tambosi recalled a rescue case she witnessed during the Hajj, an incident that made her feel that what she was doing is purely human.

“A female pilgrim suffering from hyperthermia was brought in on a stretcher. It was the first time I had seen an unconscious person. If rescuing procedures had not been provided for minutes, the woman would have died. In fact, that experience made me strongly believe in what we are doing. It was like seeing a dead person come back to life again,” she said.

“Our initiative has four teams as we have four main programs within the initiative. These are health, translation and guidance, new media and educational programs,” Tambosi explained.

Tambosi added that each field team consists of a physician, a savior, two people whose job is to document trips, and a leader.

“Seven teams left this afternoon to help pilgrims. They get back to the camp an hour before midnight,” she said.

Another female volunteer, Sumaiyah Hafiz, told Arab News her work in the initiative had taught her how to work within a team and how better to serve pilgrims from all walks of life.

“It has taught me how to work in a mixed environment where both genders confidently cooperate to give a service. We also succeeded in acclimatizing ourselves to working with strangers, people at the workplace who we knew nothing about before. This has also added to our experience,” Hafiz said.

According to the executive director of the initiative, Hani Abu Al-Saud, the idea started with the
aim of institutionalizing the voluntary work provided to worshippers, not only during Hajj but also to Umrah performers throughout the year.

Handy services

The idea came about to voluntarily provide the guests of Allah with different services they may need when they performed their rituals. He pointed out that some 185 volunteers of both genders took part in the initiative. He noted that 537 pilgrims had benefited from their medical clinic.

“Some 414 pilgrims have taken advantage of the services of our ambulatory emergency teams, while more than 1,240 other pilgrims have done well from of our translation and guidance services,” he said.

The teams have given more than 160,000 gifts to pilgrims this year, according to Al-Saud.

DiplomaticQuarter: Nepalese envoy impressed by scale of Buraidah Dates Festival

Wed, 2018-08-29 22:30

RIYADH: The Buraidah Dates Festival has a key role to play in the economic future of Saudi Arabia, according to Nepalese Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Mahendra Prasad Singh Rajput.

“It was a pleasant surprise to see so many varieties of dates,” he said, before praising the festival and its organizers for its richness, size and the diversity of quality dates.

“I see it in line with the Saudi Vision 2030 of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman that aims to diversify the economy. This well-organized dates festival, on such a large scale, will play an effective role in diversifying income and the national economy, as it will help immensely in diversifying the Saudi market. I am sure the Buraidah Dates Festival will play a very crucial economic role in coming times.”

Rajput added that it was a memorable experience to see so many varieties of dates, the excellent market management, and the thousands of consumers and traders who were very friendly and hospitable. During his visit, the ambassador toured the market square, a local date farm, watched auctions, and met farmers and sellers.

Al-Qassim region, which hosts the festival in Buraidah every year, is a major center for the growing, buying and selling of dates and their derivatives, with farmers anticipating major sales during the event, which kicked off early in August and continues for more than a month.

More than simply an annual marketplace, it is also a lifeline for thousands of farmers and youths who rely on the income it generates.

Saudi Arabia has the highest number of the date palm trees in the world, roughly accounting for 25 percent of the world date production.

Al-Qassim region alone has about eight million dates palm trees, the highest of any region in the Kingdom.

The market is operated by Al-Qassim municipality. It covers 300,000 square meters and has vast loading areas to accommodate thousands of trucks and long, refrigerated trailers.

The Ministry of Agriculture encourages palm tree-farming, allocates land and helps farmers purchase farming equipment.

The ministry also provides farmers with long-term loans through the Saudi Arabian Agricultural Bank and provides temporary visas during harvesting season.

Yemeni minister lambasts Iran, Houthis for killing 1,372 children

Author:
Wed, 2018-08-29 22:03

A senior Yemeni official has put Iran and Iranian-backed Houthi militias on notice, revealing for the first time that Houthis have ruthlessly killed 1,372 children and 814 women since war broke out in Yemen in 2014.

Mohammed Askar, the Yemeni human rights minister, said: “Hundreds of children and women have been killed also from March to August this year.” The killings are being documented by the ministry in the form of a report to be released soon, he said.

Askar, while appreciating the support of Saudi Arabia and the Arab coalition, said: “The Kingdom and the UAE together have provided half of the humanitarian aid and assistance as per the target set by the UN for 2018.

“Saudi Arabia has also provided a $2 billion bank deposit to curb the collapse of Yemen’s national currency and to stimulate the economy,” said Askar, referring to the continuous humanitarian support extended by Riyadh.

In a toughly worded warning, Askar also lambasted the destabilizing behavior of Iran, noting the observation of a UN panel, which said that the Houthis are using “winning weapons including missiles and anti-tank guns smuggled from Iran.

“Iran has succeeded in turning the Houthis into a military tool that threatens international peace and security, especially in the navigational corridors of Yemen like Bab Al-Mandab and adjoining waters.”

Askar said: “Iran finds in the collapse of countries (like Yemen) an ideal opportunity to export its ideology of Khomeini revolution, and expand its regional influence.”

The Iran-Houthi nexus has led to the killings of more than 814 innocent Yemeni women since 2014 as well as 89 detainees, who died in the Houthi-run illegal prisons due to torture and even executions,” he added.

“Iran has poured funds and arms in a fervent bid to expand their hegemony in the region. The Iranian intransigence has kept the war raging, which has shattered the lives of Yemenis,” he said.

He pointed out that a large number of civilians, including women and children, have been arrested and kept in illegal detention centers by Houthis.

“This year alone until today, 12 detainees have been killed by Houthis in their prisons,” said the minister.

Asked about the systematic genocide committed by Houthi militants, Askar said: “The Houthis have transformed a large number of schools and hospitals into military barracks and prison houses.

“The Yemeni Ministry of Human Rights has documented 13,389 dead, including 1,372 children, since the Houthis declared war and stormed the capital Saana on Dec. 12, 2014, until February this year.”

He said the total number of arrests since the beginning of the coup exceeds 21,706. “The number of detainees, who are still in the prisons of the militias, exceeds 2,652; while a large number of men, women and children are either missing or languishing in secret prisons of the Houthi militants,” said the minister, putting a question mark on the fate of more than 17 journalists abducted and imprisoned by the Houthi militias.

The Houthis, he said, have also abducted 941 people since January. “While these numbers are documented by the Yemeni Ministry of Human Rights, undocumented cases will be much higher,” he noted.

On the question of UN intervention to secure the release of detainees, who are mostly Yemeni activists, academics, politicians, and journalists; Askar said that the UN Resolution 2216, which has mentioned the detainees, has called for their release. But the Houthis have not released them so far, he said, expressing his grave concerns.

Wed, 2018-08-29 12:22

DUBAI: Three Saudi royals have been appointed to the International Olympic Committee, it was announced on Wednesday.

The three are Prince Abdulaziz Bin Turki Al-Faisal Al-Saud, Vice Chairman of the General Sports Authority (GSA) of Saudi Arabi, Princess Reema Bint Bandar Al Saud, Vice President of Planning and Development for the GSA, and Prince Fahad bin Jalawi bin Abdulaziz, Executive Director of International Relations for the Saudi Arabian Olympic Committee.

The appointments come as Saudi Arabia’s Olympic vision gathers strength with 137 athletes from the Kingdom currently competing in the Asian Games in Jakarta.

Prince Abdulaziz has been appointed to the Marketing Commission of the IOC, a body which works to advance the values of the Olympic movement.

“It comes at a moment that the Kingdom is focused on our athletes and their performance on the world stage, both now and into the future. Saudi Arabia’s team at the Asian Games has the largest number of female athletes competing in the tournament, and Princess Reema has said she intends to build the numbers even further as a member of the IOC’s Women and Sports Commission.

Princess Reema said: “We value many mutual goals with the commission and have been working to realize them. We are committed to increasing participation of women athletes in the Olympic program and in leadership positions within the Olympic Movement.”
